My journey as a Certified Barton Reading & Spelling tutor began in approximately 2010, little did I know at the time, with the discovery that my bright and intelligent young son had dyslexia. I was homeschooling my son and could not understand why he was struggling learning to read but comprehended everything that I read to him. He loved being read to and learning new words. He so enjoyed learning about science, history, and geography, and most of all, words, the meaning of new words, so he could start using them. I had questions to why a child can learn science, math, history, geography, and yet not reading. A friend suggested I have him educationally tested. Through the testing my question “why” was answered, my son has dyslexia. I was given a list of reading and spelling curriculum that would benefit my son. I did research and decided to try The Barton Reading & Spelling System. The results were immediate and positive, I breathed a sigh of relief, so we continued with The Barton Reading & Spelling. We worked daily with his reading lessons and progressed quite far. A couple of the big miles stones and great joys in our reading journey for both of us was when he would be in another room reading to himself, his Jokelopedia book or “Hank the Cowdog”, and I could here him laughing. He would coming running to me and say “Mom you have to read this, it is so funny.” He was so proud of himself and I breathed another sigh of relief. As we were progressing through the Barton Levels I became aware that there were Certified Barton Tutors. My love of reading, learning, and teaching all came together to peeked my curiosity, how does one become a Certified Barton Tutor. Through out my life, weather teaching children’s Sunday School, bible study, or helping teach at our informal co-op, when my son was younger, people have mentioned to me that I make them  feel comfortable, and I have the gift of teaching. So, I decided to start the process of becoming certified in the Barton Reading & Spelling System, and to further and go deeper in my understanding of Dyslexia and how to be of help to other families. Fast forward to 2017,  I love my work with my students, watching them blossom into readers, getting to know them as a person, and  becoming apart of their families, it is sure a blessing to me.
